Dead Cheesecake

I walked by the desktop and found out that my soon-to-be 11 year old niece, Jillian, left a message for her nine year old brother, Sean, on an MS Word document. So, I inserted a picture.

This Song Gets a Joey Potter Stink Face

I remember when DAWSON'S CREEK originally aired on The WB, but never watched it until it was in syndication on TBS. A few years later, I'm re-watching the entire series now on Netflix, but they've changed the iconic song of the show's title sequence from this...

...to this song that sounds like it belongs to a '90s sitcom starring Brooke Shields...

Huffington Post explains why Paula Cole's "I Don't Want to Wait" has been replaced with Jann Arden's "Run Like Mad." I'll give Arden some credit--at least "Run Like Mad" fits the tone of the title sequence a little better, but "I Don't Want to Wait" is like teen angst captured in a bottle.

I'm sure many people overseas, or new to the series, are only familiar with Arden's song, but, for me, the change bastardizes my viewing experience. So to this surprising development...

Had we known, Katie Holmes could have just sung the opening song.

TRAILER: Gatchaman

We're bound to get another Power Rangers movie and I hope Zack Snyder directs it.

Man of Steel Begins & A Well-Timed Air Conditioner

Unlike Christian Bale in Batman Begins, Cavill doesn't get all the best character-driven scenes that establish Superman's backstory in MAN OF STEEL BEGINS (2013). But, Cavill does do his best with what David Goyer and Chris Nolan--the two guys who wrote Batman Begins--are giving him.

And note that I'm calling the film "Man of Steel Begins" because after Chris Nolan successfully "rebooted" the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, the title of every franchise reboot and origin story afterwards must end with "Begins."

Between his ability as an actor, his charisma, and his heroic beard and abs, HENRY CAVILL IS SUPERMAN. We all just sort of wish he had more to do on screen, is all. And, like Superman, the rest of the film is well cast, but they also don't have that much to do in a sloppy narrative structure with flashbacks tossed all over the place. The flashbacks were framed well in Batman Begins, but not so much in Man of Steel Begins.

At least director Zack Snyder knows how to make shit look cool and that's one of the biggest things the film has going for it. Man of Steel Begins has a great cast and looks cool. Coming out of the cinema, you'll believe a man can make a Dragon Ball Z movie; those are the types of flying fisticuffs you get in Man of Steel Begins, even if the 30-40 minute third act action sequence does become a bit tiresome and your eyes go dry from watching shit blow up.

On a related note: there's a great scene during Man of Steel Begins when Clark puts on the suit for the first time to become Superman and tries to hone his powers by flying. Homeboy concentrates and launches himself into the air, the music swells, I hear a roar, and feel this strong gust of air blowing over me.

"Wow! This is amazing 4D!"

As it turns out, the AC just kicked on in the cinema right above me as Superman began to fly.

See You Soon, Sandman

A customer almost convinced me to buy Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN comic book series. I told her I wanted to buy the Absolute editions of Sandman, but they were out of my price range.
"Nah," she replied. "Don't even bother with Absolute Sandman. Just get them in paperback." She added that she's read everything Gaiman's written and even did her graduate thesis on Sandman. I was sold! A few hours later, three volumes were added to my Amazon cart. But then, I did the unthinkable.

I used math.

If I wait till August, I can save up and buy Sandman - Omnibus Vol. 1 when it's released; that's the first 37 issues collected in a hardcover for $71.61. But, how many trade paperback volumes do I need to buy to match the Omnibus volume? I had to Wikipedia that shit!

Five paperback volumes collecting a total of 37 issues for a total of $74.39 versus one 37 issue hardcover omnibus for $71.61.

I guess I'll be seeing you around September, Dream.

EXCISION (2012)

Intercepted images from Richard Bates Jr.'s film.

AnnaLynne McCord is fantastic in this darkly comedic and disturbed teenage psychological-horror film. I only wished McCord could play this character in a television series.
